1. What do you like most on your role in SAB?
The opportunity combine two of my favorite things: acting and sign language. I am so blessed to be able to earn a living doing what I love and work with so many personal friends from the Deaf community. I am so proud to be a part of this show

2.  What was the biggest challenge you had working at SAB? (either character or personal challenge)
I had to refrain myself from hugging everybody and making them my instant friends. After working on several episodes I now feel like I’m part of the family but it didn’t happen overnight.

3. What was the first sign you learned?
If I can remember correctly, at El Camino College, I learned how to fingerspell first. I don’t really recall my very first sign.

4. What is your favorite sign?
One of the most beautiful signs in ASL is “sunrise” . I also like “sunset” and “sun”.
I enjoy signing the loan sign “back”  (signed b-c-k) because of the movement. It looks so cool!

5. What are your plans for the future?
I hope to continue to work on Switched At Birth as long as the show airs.
I have produced a film called SIGNING FUNNY about my comedy showcase with a hilarious sign language interpreter making stand up comedy accessible to the Deaf community. This short documentary has just been accepted into the Pride of the Ocean film festival sailing to Bermuda in June 2014.

Bonus: As a Bay & Emmett Fan page, would you like to say anything for our followers, Bemmett shippers and SAB fans in general?
All of the SAB fans that I know of are loyal,  devoted and loving. I appreciate each and every one of you.

Spanish

Realmente no recuerdo mi primera señal.

Fountain

I’m sure many viewers were happy that John and Daphne reconnected and their father and daughter bond is back on track. John has definitely come around with his fatherhood instinct even with trusting Toby with his manly decision. One thing that is so nice to see is how much John has improved in sign language. Yes he is still raw and miss many signs filling the void with his own words, but even in a statistics about fathers of deaf kids, most fathers don’t sign, yet we see John struggling but still motivated to learn his daughter language.

Kathryn portrayed the usual protective mom who can’t see her 1st born leave the house and fly on his own. The scenes between Kathryn and Toby about his decision were ones of the touchiest ones in this episode. It is hard to see your kid grow up and leave you, but Kathryn and her big heart did make it happen. One thing it was intriguing was that so far we have been seeing John and Kathryn’s marriage being in some kind of danger; however in this episode it was nice to see their understanding of each other personality. It is always nice to see their bond and commitment as a couple of 20 years together and for the first time this season, it was nice to see John reasoning with Kathryn about her opinion and attitude, she did what she used to do on the other 2 seasons long; she discussed with her husband about her concerns.

When Theresa Ledarski talks to Bay about the reality that is to be expected in the artistic world, is one of my favorite parts. Up to now it seems that Bay had no idea about what she is yet to encounter once she starts her path to become an artist. Theresa gave her a front seat wide view of what it is to be an artist of her category. She showed so much that Bay decision was amazing, keeping the positive attitude and believing in herself was the best message this episode has sent to its viewers. It doesn’t matter which area or field of work you want to get into, believe in yourself and what you can do will always get to where you want to be. Sure it may take long, but never giving up and keeping the positive attitude, like Bay did, is the key to a great life.

As for Emmett, it was great to see Emmett and Daphne friendship talk again. It has been quite a while since they both had a real serious talk. Their friendship is so pure and honest that makes their scene together always a joy for our eyes, especially as they both just sign with no talk. It is always a joy to watch the sign language scenes, it is like they are performing with their whole body, which literally they are. The great part of Emmett suffering on this episode has nothing to do with his love for Bay but the big secret he had to carry about one of his great friends. Thank goodness Daphne supported him because apparently Travis won’t and who knows if he will encounter any other friend who will be against his decision to report Matthew? There is a fine line here, report a crime or support your friend? It was obvious that no matter what he would say, Matthew wouldn’t listen to him, he did his part as a friend to help him, but as we all know, to refuge a criminal is also a crime. Emmett in no way is a criminal and would not become one by hiding the facts. He did what is right; thanks to Daphne he is again clean. Now will Emmett face the wrath of his friends for doing the right thing? That is something we will see as the show progress.

Your Body is a Battleground?

Continuing on the series for the second Episode, all of the lovely characters are now set for the new season plots and twists to come. For the first time since season 1 I actually see a real good cliffhanger at the end of the episode. What will Emmett do about his information on who is slashing tires at Carlton? That is the biggest questions that will be in our heads for the next 7 days. Another surprise too, came to Daphne to find out Campbell has a girlfriend, maybe now we will see her getting more involved with Jorge..as we know these girls are never alone for too long.

The most adorable character, Bay is really out of her element in a hokey field, but we do get to see her finally noticing Emmett a little and even at the end, apparently they are going to hang out at the pizza place, something they haven't done even in a group since that dramatic prom over 2 years ago.

Something I personally liked to see how much of John Kennish is in Toby, the tough coach, showing around the marriage ring on his left hand and fighting for the team to continue and grow.

John himself on the other hand, became a very difficult character to describe or predict. Kathryn too. The Kennishes relationship since the beginning were the strongest one in the show, they are married for over 20 years and they should know each other more than anything. They were tight, romantic and supportive of each other, yet this season we see a scared Kathryn that lies to her husband instead of talk about her problems with him as she used to. And John seems to be not confident or lacking the memory of how his wife is(or was) to be doubting of her with another guy after all those years. If he seem to notice any changes on her, he would have talked to her a long time ago, like he used to on season 1, but no, it doesn't seem he noticed anything, so why would he doubt of her? They are most definitely not making sense anymore.

The one thing that I am still missing is more deaf interactions on the story lines. Aside from a few scenes with Emmett, there are almost no ASL spoken on the episode.

For all that is worth, episode 2 was an amazing episode with lots of fun stories and a great dynamic back to the old times when the episode did nothing but catch your whole attention.

Here is the promo for next week:

Drowning Girl

Season 3 premiere of Switched at Birth started with a big bang but the story on this very first, so expected episode was somewhat lost. With too many new characters being introduced right on the very first episode, the regular actors lost a little of track on where they have stood or what they will be doing from now on.

It was an episode of JUST plots starting, from my point of view, not one old plot left hanging from the 2nd season was addressed or attempted to have a closure on this 1st episode of the season, however we do see many new plots coming to the screen which may consist on making this season one with the most story lines to be unfold before the end, and that means a lot of actions being taken so those stories can have a closure (hopefully) before the end.

Congratulations on Toby for improving his sign language and finally picking his dominant hand to sign. Previously, Toby was signing switching hands, even though the sign was right, switching of dominant hand is not "permitted" on signing languges. On his scenes in this episode, Toby maintain his signing with his dominant left hand for, what we can say, 98% of the time, switching really few times between hands!

As for our favorite character, Bay, can she spend 1 episode without crying or fighting? It was obvious that a girl of her kind, sensitive and 17, would be still hung up on the ex-boyfriend who was her "first". The story on this episode represents 99% of the 17 year old girls in love and heart-broken, which in my opinion, made this episode the most accurate for Bay's character from all the other episode aired so far. My question here is, why didn't we see that when she broke up with Emmett? Yes, of course her relationship with Ty was more intimate, but her relationship with Emmett was also, in many ways, really profound. So much that up until now, we (the audience) can still feel the tension when Bay and Emmett are together on scene. So, where are all the tears for Emmett? Here is my theory: She was mad at him more than she was hurt. The anger made her strong, so much that she forgave him, in her heart, just a couple weeks later. Plus, she was aware of all he was doing to get her back, to make her feel wanted again and to prove he was still in love with her. He was there for her all the time (except one drunken and very mess up night, because of her..in a way, she made him go overboard with his emotions - anger). The situation and feelings she went through when Emmett cheated on her was somewhat serving to prepare her to handle the "Ty cheating" situation (Yes, I know he didn't really cheat, but that is what she thinks it happened, so her feelings is in correspondence to that thought). With Emmett, it was something she have never handled before, but with Ty, she already knew the feeling, how the heart would hurt with the pain of knowing the guy she is with is not into her enough to go around and sleep with someone else. So in a way, her experience with Emmett just made her more prepared to how to handle what is happening with Ty and she is doing really good, except she is now even more hurt to know that Ty not only cheated, but he also doesn't care to make amends, he doesn't care about her feelings, he is not there for her, not even to discuss about it or try to work things out, he didn't care to prove his "love" (remember he said the "L" word to her on episode 18 of season 2), like Emmett was the whole time.

I expect to see a lot more of Bay still crying over Ty, but I hope she will realize the difference of Love between what Emmett did and repented to what Ty did and didn't care to make amends, hopefully soon enough before she loses both forever. And Bay MUST decide deep in her heart, who she REALLY loves.

On another subject of the character, back to school, Bay went back to be on Bay style again. Even on Season 2, when Bay transfered to Carlton, the character went through a change of style on clothes and hair/make up. She let go of the beautiful high maintenance curls and dresses with stocking to a light wavy to completely straightened hair (when not on buns or braids) with a lot of jeans and pants. On Season 2B, she had totally forgot about curls, wears little to no makeup and not to mention the whole light clothes and shorts with no stoking, making her a very common teenager, and not really the complex and amazing beauty Bay. We didn't really see Bay with stocking on this episode, but the beautiful curls are back to her style, and she is even putting some make up as we see the mascara coming down her face with her tears on the scene she cries with Tank. She also starts wearing, again, the heavy dark clothes that defined her and complete her skin color together with her hair color. Welcome back Bay!!

1. What do you like most on your role in SAB?  I love being Matthew because he is PROUD of being Deaf and so am I! Working at SAB is like being in heaven because I love acting and love working with the awesome people there.

2.  What was the biggest challenge you had working at SAB? (either character or personal challenge) The biggest challenge is when I can't see the interpreter to know what the director wants me to do. This happens sometimes when the crew is in the way. So I will have to ask people to move so I can see the interpreter - which can be awkward to do.

3. What was the first sign you learned?  I don't really remember the first sign I learned, but it was probably "more" for more food!

4. What was the first sign you learned?  That is a good question, I guess I don't really have a favorite sign, but I love to play with language and put my own spin on signs when I'm telling stories or am on stage.

5. What are your plans for the future? I plan to keep working on acting and getting involved in as many shows and productions as possible! I also really want to find a way to visit schools for the Deaf all over the country to talk with Deaf students and encourage them to follow their dreams and passions.
Bonus: As a Bay & Emmett Fan page, would you like to say anything for our followers, Bemmett shippers and SAB fans in general?
